Same Prompt, Two Results: Which Creates Better Product Images, Tinker or ChatGPT?

Same Prompt, Two Results: Which Creates Better Product Images, Tinker or ChatGPT?

Shopify recently introduced Tinker as a platform integrating more than 100 AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic — impressive enough to make many people believe a single tool could handle everything. That’s exactly why NextSky decided to test it firsthand and see how powerful Tinker actually is.

Here’s the exact scenario:

“Product photography of "POZZA PET" premium pet food packaging, two sides visible — front label facing camera, back label angled to the right at 30°.

Front: brand name "POZZA PET" in bold serif font, large hero image of a happy golden retriever, product name "Chicken & Salmon Adult Formula", weight "1.5 kg", dusty rose and warm mocha color scheme. Back: nutritional table, ingredient list, feeding guide, barcode, brand logo — same color palette.

Style: clean white studio background, soft natural light from upper-left, subtle shadow beneath packaging, shot at eye level, photorealistic, commercial product photography, 4K. Color palette: dusty rose #C4736A, warm mocha brown #7B4F3A, cream white #FAF5F2, gold accent #C9A96E.”

Same situation, same prompt, first tested in Tinker, then in ChatGPT.

The results

Tinker generated an image that stayed surprisingly close to the brief: both sides of the package appeared correctly, the color palette matched, and the overall composition followed the instructions well. But when looking closer, the image still lacked a visual focal point. The white background felt flat, the lighting lacked depth, and the shadows were too soft to create strong visual contrast. The final result looked more like a polished template render than a carefully art-directed product shoot.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, delivered a much more refined visual result. Despite using the same color direction and design intent, the image had noticeably better depth and atmosphere. Lighting and shadows felt more natural, the packaging material showed realistic texture, and both the logo and typography appeared significantly sharper. Altogether, the output felt closer to a professionally directed commercial photoshoot.

Where Tinker clearly falls behind

Tinker still struggles with lighting control and spatial depth. For products that contain a lot of printed details — nutrition tables, barcodes, or multiple text layers — the output often feels flattened, causing important visual elements to lose emphasis.

By comparison, ChatGPT performs much better at building visual hierarchy. The front-facing side of the product naturally becomes the focal point, while the back side subtly recedes into the composition. Combined with more cinematic lighting and depth handling, the final image feels more realistic, dynamic, and premium.

But Tinker is not useless

Tinker’s real advantage is not image quality — it’s speed and simplicity.

With Tinker, merchants don’t need to write long prompts. They simply choose the image style they want, upload the product, fill in a few basic details, and generate results within minutes. For beginners unfamiliar with prompt engineering, Tinker can already produce acceptable outputs in under two minutes.

More importantly, Tinker handles several real-world workflows that ChatGPT still cannot deliver as seamlessly in a single experience.

  • Short-form video creation: While ChatGPT can’t generate videos within a single workflow, Tinker lets users upload an image, choose a style, and instantly create ready-to-post clips for Instagram Stories or TikTok.
  • AI Product Video Generator: Product Morph Video by Tinker for Shopify uses AI to turn product images into short promotional videos with professional motion and visual effects. Simply upload an image, and the system automatically creates videos optimized for TikTok, Reels, and social ads, helping sellers produce fast, high-quality, and brand-consistent content without video editing skills.

The real conclusion

If you need product images for ads or homepage banners, use ChatGPT and invest a few extra minutes refining the prompt.

If you simply need quick placeholder visuals for a website, don’t have the budget for a real photoshoot, or are managing everything alone, Tinker is fast, practical, and free.

Tinker is not competing with ChatGPT. It’s a tool built for people who are not yet ready to use ChatGPT to its full potential.
