How to change your Shopify domain?
Changing your Shopify domain usually means either adding a new custom domain or switching which domain is primary (the one customers see). Here’s how to do both in Shopify admin:
Change your primary Shopify domain
- Log in to your Shopify admin.
- Go to Settings → Domains.
- In the domain list, find the domain you want customers to use.
- Click Set as primary.
- Confirm.
Your store will now load on the new primary domain.

Add a new custom domain (if you don’t have it yet)
- Go to Settings → Domains.
- Click Connect existing domain (if bought elsewhere) or Buy new domain (purchase via Shopify).
- Follow the DNS connection steps.
- After connection, click Set as primary.

Important notes
- Your default
your-store.myshopify.comdomain cannot be changed or deleted. - You can connect multiple domains and switch the primary anytime.
- Domain changes may take a few minutes (DNS propagation).

Why change your Shopify store name or domain?
Changing your store name or domain is more than cosmetic—it's a strategic move reflecting growth, vision, or operational shifts. Key reasons include:
- Brand repositioning: A new identity, such as expanding from niche to broader categories, may require a fitting name. For example, shifting from "Jane's Jewelry" to "Jane's Lifestyle" to include clothing and accessories.
- Business expansion: If your store now offers diverse products, the old name may no longer fit. E.g., "TechTrend Gadgets" becomes unsuitable when adding home decor.
- Ownership changes: New owners often rebrand to align with their vision or personal brand.
- Confusing or inaccurate names: Names too similar to competitors or misrepresenting products can drive customers away. E.g., "SneakerHaven" confuses if you sell fitness gear too.
- Domain synchronization: Matching your store name to a custom domain (e.g., from shopname.myshopify.com to shopname.com) boosts consistency and trust.
Key considerations for a successful Shopify store transition
Update Shopify ID: Your Shopify ID is the login for admin, Shopify Learn, and services. When changing names:
- Go to Settings > Users and permissions to update your Shopify ID.
- Use strong passwords with letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for security.
- For multiple stores, go to Settings > Stores > Add store and link the new myshopify.com domain to your existing ID.
Merge stores: For multiple stores, designate a primary one, update its name/domain, then migrate data using Shopify's import/export tools.
Communicate the change
- Send emails, social posts, or blogs explaining the rebrand to build trust.
- Update logos, themes, and marketing materials. NextSky's Shopify themes like Glozin, Agile, and Umino can customize interfaces for your new identity.
- Use Google Ads or Meta Ads to redirect old visitors to the new domain.
Legal and commercial considerations
- Ensure the new name doesn't infringe trademarks.
- If the store name is your legal business name, notify registration authorities.
- Verify consistency via Shopify or providers like Namecheap.
